Nuit & Jour_02_The Bridge

from La Nuit et le Jour by Gilles Zimmermann

/

about

The Bridge: "On Me all things are strung like beded pearls." Bhagavad Gita VII, 7.
The singing is based on a single note from which various harmonics arise. The Greek root "mu", as in "myth" and "mystery", of french "muet" (mute) represents the closed mouth, and silence, which as almost every musician knows, is the source of music.
This technique of sound production is still to be found in the "folk" jew´s harp and Mongolia (no propaganda in favor of any bogus "shamanic" practices). The crossing of the bridge is illustrated by the bowed viol in the second "mode" derivated from the first. This "mode", though outside Gregorian music, is widely known, from the Balkans to Andalusia. It is the basis of Tsigane music, Arabian maqam Hijaz, and in Indian music has various names, for example Bhairav.
